Practical questions to work through before deciding what stays and what goes.

A Simple Approach to Decluttering Your Wardrobe

Wardrobe decluttering advice often leans toward extremes — keep almost nothing, or a rigid capsule count. A more practical approach starts with a few honest questions rather than a fixed number.

Separate 'worn recently' from 'might wear someday'

Items worn in the last several months are a reasonable core to keep without much debate. Items in the "might wear someday" category deserve more scrutiny, since that category tends to grow indefinitely if left unchecked.

Check fit as it is now, not as it used to be

Bodies and preferences change over time. An item kept because it fit well several years ago is a different decision than one that fits well today.

Notice repeated repair or alteration needs

An item that consistently needs re-hemming, restitching, or other repairs may not be worth the ongoing effort, even if it was a good purchase originally.

Think about what you reach for, not what looks good on a hanger

Some pieces look appealing in the closet but rarely get chosen in practice. Paying attention to actual usage patterns over a few weeks can be more revealing than a single sorting session.

There's no universally correct wardrobe size. The goal is closer alignment between what's kept and what actually gets worn, which reduces both clutter and the daily friction of deciding what to put on.
